Gulf Winter Season 2026: UAE, Saudi and Qatar Visas Compared
October to March is peak season in the Gulf. Compare UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain entry options, costs and stay lengths before the winter rush.

The Gulf inverts the northern travel calendar. Summer is the off-season nobody wants; October through March is when the weather turns pleasant, the events calendar fills and hotel rates climb. Which means the visa questions arrive now.
Five countries, five different systems, and a lot of confusion about which one lets you in on arrival.
Side-by-side comparison
| Country | Main tourist option | Stay | Indicative cost | Processing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UAE | eVisa or visa on arrival (by nationality) | 30 or 60 days; 5-year multi-entry available | US$25-190 | 2-5 working days |
| Saudi Arabia | Tourist eVisa / visa on arrival for eligible nationals | 1-year multi-entry, 90 days per visit | ~SAR 535 incl. insurance | Minutes to 72 hours |
| Qatar | Hayya platform / visa-free for many nationalities | 30-90 days | Free to QAR 100 | Instant to 5 days |
| Oman | eVisa; visa-free for many nationalities | 14 or 30 days | Free to OMR 20 | 1-5 working days |
| Bahrain | eVisa or visa on arrival | 14 days to 1 year multi-entry | BHD 9-36 | 1-5 working days |
Fees and eligibility change frequently in the region, so treat these as planning figures and confirm against the official portal for your nationality before you pay anyone.
UAE: the five-year option changes the maths
If you visit Dubai or Abu Dhabi more than once a year, the five-year multi-entry visit visa is usually cheaper than repeated 30-day visas, and it allows stays of up to 90 days per visit, extendable once. It requires a bank balance showing roughly US$4,000 and a return ticket. Full breakdown in our UAE visit visa guide.
Overstays are enforced with daily fines and are recorded, which matters for future GCC applications. Extensions are handled through the ICP portal or an approved typing centre, do it before the last day, not on it.
Saudi Arabia: tourism is now the easy part
The tourist eVisa covers leisure travel, events, and Umrah, and includes mandatory medical insurance in the fee. It is a one-year multi-entry authorisation, so a winter trip to AlUla and a spring return to Jeddah run on the same document. What it does not cover is Hajj, which uses a separate permit system with quotas. Our Saudi eVisa guide goes deeper.
Dress codes have relaxed considerably for visitors but remain a practical consideration at religious sites and in smaller towns.
Qatar and Oman: the quiet ones
Qatar grants visa-free entry to over 90 nationalities, typically for 30 or 90 days depending on the passport, registered through the Hayya platform. It is the least bureaucratic Gulf entry for most travellers.
Oman is the value pick for a winter trip, Muscat, Jebel Akhdar and the Wahiba Sands are at their best from November to February, and many European, GCC and North American passports enter visa-free for 14 days. Longer stays use a cheap eVisa.
Planning around the winter calendar
Rates spike around Formula 1 in Abu Dhabi, the Dubai Shopping Festival in late December and January, and Riyadh Season events. Ramadan begins in mid-February in 2027, which changes opening hours, alcohol service and the general rhythm of a trip, not a reason to avoid the region, but worth knowing before you book.
One immigration detail travellers overlook: several Gulf states require passports valid six months beyond entry, not three. Check that first, because it is the one thing you cannot fix at the airport.
FAQ
Does a UAE visa let me enter Saudi Arabia or Qatar?
No. There is no single GCC tourist visa yet. Each country requires its own authorisation, though a unified scheme has been discussed for years.
Can I get a visa on arrival in Dubai?
Many nationalities can, including most EU, UK, US, Australian and Japanese passports. Others must apply online in advance.
Is travel insurance required for Saudi Arabia?
Yes, and it is bundled into the eVisa fee automatically.
How long can I stay in Oman visa-free?
Typically 14 days for eligible nationalities, with an eVisa needed beyond that.
What happens if I overstay in the UAE?
Daily fines accrue and must be cleared before departure. Repeat overstays can lead to entry bans across the region.
