The UAE has one of the most flexible short-stay visa structures of any major destination, and 2026 has only widened the options. Between the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), Dubai's GDRFA, and the airline-issued visa channels via Emirates and Etihad, almost every nationality has a fast, online route to a UAE entry stamp.

    What Changed in 2026

The Federal Authority quietly tightened documentation requirements in late 2025, most visit visa applications now require a recent bank statement showing minimum AED 3,000 (about $815) balance. The 5-year multi-entry visa, originally launched in 2022, has been simplified: you no longer need a UAE sponsor, and the cumulative stay cap was increased from 180 to 180 days per year (with an option to extend in 90-day chunks). Transit visa rules were also harmonized between Emirates and flydubai/Etihad in March 2026.

    The 2026 UAE Visa Menu

    30-Day Tourist Visa

Single entry, 30 days from arrival, extendable once by another 30 days. Cost: AED 350 ($95) via GDRFA, AED 250 ($68) via ICP. Most popular for first-time visitors.

    60-Day Tourist Visa

Single entry, 60 days. Cost: AED 650 ($177) via GDRFA. Increasingly popular with long-trip leisure travelers and remote workers.

    5-Year Multi-Entry Visit Visa

Multiple entry over 5 years. 90-day stay per entry, extendable by another 90 days. Total presence capped at 180 days per calendar year. Cost: AED 650 ($177) plus AED 1,150 ($313) processing, total around $490. Requires 6 months of bank statements showing minimum $4,000 balance.

    96-Hour Transit Visa (Free)

Issued by Emirates, flydubai, Etihad, and Air Arabia for connecting passengers. Free for the first 96 hours; a 48-hour version is also available. Apply via the airline at booking or check-in.

    Green Visa

5-year self-sponsored residency for skilled workers, freelancers, and investors. Requires a bachelor's degree, monthly salary of AED 15,000+ (or freelance income equivalent). Different from the visit visa, covered separately in our UAE country guide.

    Step-by-Step Application

    1. Choose your channel: GDRFA (Dubai entry), ICP (other emirates), or your airline.
    2. Create an account on the relevant portal (GDRFA Smart Services, ICP, Emirates Visa).
    3. Upload passport bio page (6+ months validity), recent photo (white background), bank statement, return ticket if applicable.
    4. Pay the visa fee plus processing fees.
    5. Receive the e-visa PDF by email, usually within 24-96 hours.
    6. Print the e-visa or have it on your phone for boarding and arrival.

    Common Mistakes

    • Booking flights before visa approval. The 24-96 hour window is reliable but not guaranteed. Buy refundable or wait.
    • Submitting an unclear bank statement. Statements without your full name, account number, and stamp are routinely rejected. Use the official PDF download from your bank.
    • Confusing GDRFA and ICP. They serve different emirates. If you're flying into DXB, use GDRFA or Emirates. Flying into AUH or SHJ, use ICP or Etihad.
    • Overstaying. Fines are AED 50/day. The system catches you on exit, and overstays bar you from the 5-year visa for at least 6 months.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Which nationalities are visa-free?

83 countries get visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry, including all GCC, EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, China, and most of Latin America. Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Egyptians, and most African nationals require pre-approved visas.

Can I work on a visit visa?

No. Paid employment requires a residence permit. Remote work for a foreign employer is tolerated in practice but not formally permitted.

Can I extend the 30-day visa?

Yes, once, for another 30 days, by paying AED 600 (~$163) before expiry. Two extensions back-to-back are not allowed.

How does the 180-day cap on the 5-year visa work?

You can stay up to 90 days per entry, extend once by 90 days, but your cumulative presence in the UAE within any rolling 12-month period must not exceed 180 days. The system tracks this automatically at exit.

    Do I need travel insurance?

Strongly recommended and increasingly required for tourist visa applicants from higher-risk source countries.

Can my visa be cancelled mid-trip?

Only if you violate the terms (overstay, illegal work). Otherwise it remains valid until expiry.

Is the 5-year visa worth it for one-off trips?

No. If you'll only visit once, the 60-day visa at $177 is far better value than $490 for the 5-year.
