The best three months of the travel year start the week the school holidays end. Prices drop, queues shorten, and the weather in the Mediterranean, the Caucasus and Southeast Asia is often better in October than in August.

The catch is that spontaneity depends on paperwork. So here are ten places that most passports can reach this autumn with a light entry process, plus what has changed for each.

    Europe and the near neighbourhood

Albania allows many nationalities up to 90 days visa-free and, unusually, up to a year for US citizens. Autumn on the Riviera between Himarë and Ksamil is warm into October, with the summer crowds gone.

Georgia gives citizens of around 95 countries a full year of visa-free stay. Tbilisi in October, wine harvest in Kakheti, and it sits outside Schengen, which makes it a useful place to spend days while your 90/180 allowance recovers. Check the timing with our Schengen calculator.

Turkey is visa-free for many passports and runs a straightforward eVisa for the rest. Cappadocia balloon season is at its most reliable in autumn.

Montenegro and Serbia both allow 90-day visa-free stays for a wide range of nationalities, and the Adriatic coast stays swimmable into early October.

    Asia

Malaysia waives visas for most Western, Chinese and Indian travellers for 30 to 90 days, and requires the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card submitted within three days of arrival. Border officers do check it.

Vietnam issues a 90-day multiple-entry eVisa to all nationalities for about US$25, approved in around three working days. Central Vietnam is wet in October, but the north, Hanoi, Ha Giang, Sapa, is at its best.

Sri Lanka has extended free or low-cost visa access to a long list of nationalities, and the east coast is finishing its season while the south-west begins.

    Further afield

Morocco is visa-free for 90 days for most European, North American and Gulf passports. October and November are ideal for Marrakech and the Atlas, once the summer heat breaks.

Rwanda issues visas on arrival to all nationalities, and the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Kenya and Uganda alongside it for US$100. The dry season starts in June, but the short rains in autumn keep prices down.

Two things that changed this year

Digital arrival cards have spread fast, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and several others now expect an online form submitted before or on arrival. They are free, they take five minutes, and third-party sites charging US$40 for them are simply reselling a government form.

And in Europe, the Entry/Exit System now records entries and exits biometrically, which means the informal tolerance some travellers relied on around the 90-day limit is gone. Overstays are visible to every border in the area.

    FAQ

    What is shoulder season, exactly?

The weeks either side of peak season, broadly September to November and April to May in the northern hemisphere, when weather is still good and prices are not.

Do visa-free stays still require a return ticket?

Frequently, yes. Airlines check onward travel even when immigration does not.

Are digital arrival cards the same as visas?

No. They are free registration forms and do not grant entry permission on their own.

Can I chain visa-free countries to travel indefinitely?

Legally, each entry stands alone, but repeated patterns attract refusals. Long stays are better handled with a visa designed for them.

Which of these is cheapest to reach in autumn?

Albania, Georgia, Serbia and Morocco typically have the lowest combination of airfare and on-the-ground costs between September and November.
