Japan's eVisa, originally rolled out in 2022 for a tiny pilot group, has steadily expanded. As of May 2026 it covers travelers from a meaningful list of countries, and the experience is markedly smoother than the old paper process at JVAC. If your nationality is on the list, the application takes about 30 minutes online and the visa lands in your inbox within a working week.

    What Changed in 2026

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added several countries to the eVisa system in late 2025 and early 2026, bringing the eligible list to 19 jurisdictions. The most useful additions for global readers: Brazil, Cambodia, Mongolia, the UAE, and the Philippines. The portal interface was rebuilt in March 2026, it's now properly mobile-friendly, and the photo upload tool will tell you in real time whether your image meets the spec.

    Who Can Use the eVisa

As of May 2026, the eVisa is available to nationals of: Australia, Brazil, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Norway, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, the UAE, the United Kingdom, and the United States. If you're visa-free for Japan (most EU passports, Japan's bilateral list), you don't need an eVisa at all, you simply land. If your country isn't on either list, you still apply via JVAC or a Japanese consulate using the paper process.

    Step-by-Step Application

    1. Visit evisa.mofa.go.jp and create an account with your email.
    2. Confirm your eligibility, the portal blocks ineligible nationalities at the start.
    3. Fill in personal details, travel itinerary (flights, hotels), and contact in Japan.
    4. Upload passport bio page, recent photo (45x35mm equivalent), confirmed itinerary.
    5. Submit and wait for the case number, typically issued in minutes.
    6. Pay ¥3,000 by card when prompted (usually after initial review at day 2-3).
    7. Download the eVisa PDF when approved. Save it to your phone and print a copy.

    Common Mistakes & Rejection Reasons

    • Booking unconfirmed accommodation. Provisional bookings via aggregators can fail verification. Use direct hotel confirmations or pay in full.
    • Vague itinerary. 'Tour of Japan' isn't enough. List cities, dates, and at least one confirmed hotel per stop.
    • Photo issues. White background, no glasses, no smile. The portal's real-time checker will reject photos outside spec.
    • Insufficient funds evidence. Bank statements should show stable balances over 3 months, sudden deposits raise flags.
    • Single-entry only. The eVisa is single-entry. If you plan to leave and re-enter Japan (e.g. a side trip to Seoul), you need to apply for a multi-entry visa via the consulate instead.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extend my eVisa once in Japan?

Tourist visas are generally not extendable. You can apply for a 'designated activities' permit at the immigration office in extreme cases, but plan for the 90-day cap.

Does the eVisa work for Okinawa and Hokkaido?

Yes, the eVisa is valid for the entire territory of Japan, including all islands and prefectures. See our Japan country guide for regional travel tips.

What if my flight is connecting via another country?

That's fine. The eVisa governs entry to Japan. Your transit country may have its own rules.

Can I work on the eVisa?

No. The Temporary Visitor status prohibits paid employment. Volunteering and academic conferences are tolerated; paid work is not.

What about the new Japan Digital Nomad visa?

That's a separate 6-month visa with a ¥10 million income threshold, covered in our 2026 nomad visa ranking.

Do I need to print the eVisa?

Officially yes. Some immigration officers accept the PDF on a phone, but airlines have refused boarding without a printed copy. Bring both.

Will my eVisa data be linked to MyNumber or any Japanese ID system?

No, short-stay visitors don't get a MyNumber. The eVisa is purely a border document.
