Schengen Visa Appointments This Autumn: Beating the Post-Summer Backlog

Consulates clear their summer queues slowly. Here is how appointment waits look across Europe this autumn, and the booking tactics that still work in September and October 2026.

Every September the same thing happens. The summer rush ends, everyone assumes slots open up, and then travellers discover the backlog does not disappear, it just moves. Applications filed in July are still being decided, and the calendar that looked empty in May is suddenly full again with autumn half-term and Christmas trips.

So if you are planning a European trip between October 2026 and January 2027, this is the moment to act. Not December. Now.

Why autumn waits are longer than people expect

Schengen consulates work through applications in the order they are received, and summer volumes carry over. Add the visa information system upgrades that several member states rolled out this year, plus staff leave being taken after peak season, and the effective throughput in September is lower than in June, even though demand looks calmer.

There is a second factor. Since the EU Entry/Exit System started operating, border and consular processes both take slightly longer per traveller because biometric records are being created and cross-checked. It is a few minutes at the counter, but multiplied across thousands of files it shows up as days in the queue. Our ETIAS hub explains how the new systems fit together for visa-exempt travellers.

    Typical appointment waits by destination

Destination consulateTypical appointment wait (autumn)Decision time after appointment
    France3-6 weeks10-15 calendar days
    Spain4-8 weeks15 calendar days
    Italy4-10 weeks15-20 calendar days
    Germany6-12 weeks15-30 calendar days
    Netherlands2-5 weeks15 calendar days
    Greece2-4 weeks10-15 calendar days

These are observed ranges, not guarantees. A file with a missing bank statement resets the clock, and the 15-day standard can legally stretch to 45 days when a consulate asks for extra checks.

The rule that decides where you apply

You apply to the country of your main destination, measured by nights, not by which flight you board first. Split evenly between two countries? Then it is the country of first entry. People get this wrong constantly, and it is one of the fastest routes to a refusal, because the consulate simply declares itself not competent and keeps the fee.

Multi-country autumn itineraries are exactly where this trips travellers up. Four nights in Amsterdam and three in Brussels means the Dutch consulate. Not the one with the earliest appointment. Our Schengen visa guide walks through the competence rules in more detail.

    Booking tactics that actually work

Slots are released in batches, usually in the early morning local time of the consulate, and often on fixed weekdays. Checking once at 9am on a Tuesday beats refreshing frantically all Saturday. Keep a saved, pre-filled application profile at the visa centre so that when a slot appears you can confirm in under two minutes, that is often the difference between getting it and watching it vanish.

Premium or prime-time appointment services exist at most VFS and TLScontact centres. They are legitimate, they cost extra, and in a backlog month they can be worth it. What is not legitimate is a third party promising to "guarantee" a visa outcome. No agent can do that.

If your passport was issued more than nine years ago, check the expiry before booking anything. It must be valid for three months beyond your planned exit and issued within the last ten years. Renewals in autumn take weeks too.

Documents that get autumn files rejected

Insurance is the quiet killer. Your policy needs at least €30,000 medical cover valid across the whole Schengen area for the full trip. Annual multi-trip policies frequently exclude winter sports, so a November booking that later becomes a ski trip needs a rider.

Proof of funds is the second issue. Consulates want to see a pattern, not a balance, three to six months of statements showing normal income and spending. A large deposit landing a week before the appointment invites questions rather than answering them.

And accommodation. Refundable hotel bookings are accepted almost everywhere, but a booking confirmation with no payment trail on an eight-night trip raises eyebrows. Book something genuinely refundable rather than something fabricated.

    Counting your days correctly

The 90/180 rule is rolling, not annual. Every day you plan to be inside the area counts against the previous 180 days, including any summer trip you have already taken. Travellers who spent August in Europe often have far less autumn allowance than they assume. Run the numbers with our Schengen calculator before you commit to dates.

    FAQ

How early can I apply for an autumn Schengen visa?

Up to six months before travel, and no later than 15 days before. Applying at the four-month mark in a backlog season is normal and sensible.

Is a refused visa a permanent problem?

No. A refusal is recorded, but a corrected reapplication with the missing evidence is routinely approved. Appeals take longer than reapplying in most member states.

Can I travel to a different Schengen country than the one that issued my visa?

Yes, once issued, a uniform visa is valid across the area. Your itinerary just has to have been honest at the application stage.

Does the Entry/Exit System replace visa stamps?

It replaces manual passport stamping with a digital record of entries and exits. Your visa is still required and still checked.

Will a short layover in Europe count towards my 90 days?

Only if you clear immigration. Staying airside in transit does not consume days, though some nationalities need an airport transit visa.
